Opener Repair and Installation in Green Bay, WI

Dead openers, intermittent operation and remote faults — usually a part rather than the whole unit.

An opener that has stopped is frequently not a dead motor. The parts that fail first are the logic board, the drive gear, the limit switches and the photo eyes, all of which cost considerably less than a new unit plus installation.

The symptoms point at their own causes. Door starts down and immediately reverses: photo eyes, which in this climate usually means a bracket knocked by a shovel or a snowbank. Motor runs but nothing moves: the drive gear or trolley, and on chain drives a stripped nylon gear is extremely common. Door stops partway every time: limit switches have drifted, or the door is binding in the track.

Before replacing an opener it is worth asking whether the door is the real problem. An opener fighting worn rollers, a bent track or tired springs burns out early, and a new one installed without addressing the door simply restarts that clock. In a cold climate that is more true rather than less, because everything is stiffer and the motor works harder for the same result.

One safety point that is not negotiable. Federal rules adopted in the early 1990s required automatic reversal and photo-eye protection on residential openers. An opener predating that lacks the protection that stops a closing door trapping a child or a pet. If yours has no photo eyes at the bottom of the tracks, it should be replaced rather than repaired.

Belt drives cost a little more than chain drives and run noticeably quieter, which matters when there is a bedroom above or beside the garage. In an insulated attached garage, which is most of them here, that difference is more noticeable than it would be in a detached building.
